We are a friendly church family made up of all ages, trying to follow Jesus in daily life. If you need help making sense of life, please know you're not alone, and that you're very welcome here! And that God (Jesus) loves you, no matter how you feel about yourself. We take the Bible's teachings seriously and believe the Holy Spirit wants to speak to us and through us when we gather together. A picture that describes Lister Hill is a 'beacon' - a light that gives hope to all around. That's what we want to be, because that's who we know Jesus is. There are midweek house groups that meet in people's homes which are a great way of sharing life's journey together, whatever your background or experience of church.
We are located close to Horsforth train station and the number 97 and 6 bus stops. We're also close to Leeds Trinity University and are always pleased to offer a home from home to students. Many people know us as 'that church on the roundabout' near The Old Ball!
If you have any questions please get in touch. We'd love to get to know you.
Lister Hill Baptist Church has been around since 1918, and had existed for years before as 'Lister Hill Mission'. Originally members met and worshiped on the street called Lister Hill, but the church moved to Brownberrie Lane in 1927. Christians have worshiped and served God faithfully as part of this church for many years and without them we would not be a church today. Is God calling you to take your place in this church family, for such a time as this?
Jesus Christ is the boss of Lister Hill.
Matt Wright, our minister, is part of a team of elders (pictured below), and together they have spiritual oversight of the church. Along with our church secretary and treasurer they serve as charity trustees, and all of them work with our deacons as part of the wider leadership team. This team and many other hard-working volunteers help us be all we can be for God as we serve him and the local community.
Members of the church meet together to pray and listen to how God wants to lead us. We are all involved in this process which is key to us as Baptists. To find out more about how Baptist churches work, click here
As a Baptist church, Lister Hill agrees with the Baptist Union's 'Declaration of Principle', which says:
The Basis of the Baptist Union is:
1. That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and absolute authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each Church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws.
2. That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who 'died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried, and rose again on the third day'.
3. That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world.
